Namibia Port Expansion Monitored using High Resolution Satellite Images

Oct 06, 2014

The Namibian Port Authority, Namport, is applying an innovative approach to monitoring development and expansion of the port, ahead of the proposed Walvis Bay Corridor Development. Hatfield Consultants Africa will provide high-resolution satellite ortho images on a regular basis over the next year to Namport, to ensure that a detailed overview of expansion work is available to port management.

The first acquisition was captured in April 2014 (see below), and further acquisitions are scheduled in 2014 and 2015. As a certified DigitalGlobe partner, Hatfield will provide 50 cm multi-spectral images from the WorldView-2 satellite, like the example provided below. With the recent updates to DigitalGlobe’s distribution rules, future WorldView-2 images can be provided at 41 cm and the new WorldView-3 satellite can provide 31 cm resolution. More than ever, satellite images are able to replace aerial photos and avoid issues related to getting a survey plane in the air or a team on the ground.

Port expansion monitoring is provided as part of Hatfield’s Land Monitoring service, which aims to support clients to manage environmental and social obligations related to developments.
