European Space Agency contract announced

Feb 14, 2005

In February 2005, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that Hatfield Consultants Ltd. (Hatfield) has been awarded an Earth Observation and Market Development (EOMD) contract. This contract builds upon previous work conducted by Hatfield to employ remote sensing–based applications within the aquaculture sector.

The rapid growth and global commercialization of the aquaculture industry, coupled with increasingly stringent environmental standards, has focused attention on the need for improved monitoring tools to manage environmental impacts on production and promote sustainable growth within the sector. The goal of this project, entitled the ‘Chilean Aquaculture Project’, or CAP, is to integrate remote sensing applications into the environmental monitoring programmes of large multinational aquaculture companies. Through the CAP project, a pilot project will be implemented with a large multinational aquaculture company in Southern Chile. The project will focus on integrating remote sensing into existing in-situ monitoring programs to address issues such as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).
