Example Project: Environmental Effects Monitoring
Concerned about the mining industry’s effects on the environment, the Canadian government instituted new regulations in 1992 that required regular monitoring at metal mines to ensure their discharges were safe for the environment. Since then, Hatfield Consultants has used its scientific expertise to help mines throughout British Columbia comply with the regulations of this federal Environmental Effects Monitoring program.
For over 20 years, we’ve guided mining companies such as Copper Mountain Mining Corporation, AuRico Gold, and Huckleberry Mines Ltd through the complex regulatory process. Using our rich knowledge of Environmental Effects Monitoring, we set up programs to monitor the chemistry and toxicity of effluent, the levels of toxicity in fish tissues, and the bioaccumulation of dioxins and furans in sediments near the mine. With the data collected, we detect any potential effects on the environment, identify their causes, and develop plans to address them in line with federal obligations.
Building on decades of experience, our skilled technicians continue to support metal mines throughout British Columbia in implementing Environmental Effects Monitoring programs. Although regulations have changed over the years, Hatfield Consultants has remained up-to-date on requirements and industry best practices to ensure our clients’ environmental commitments are upheld.
