Forest Programme III (REDD+): Central Sulawesi Province

Client

KfW Entwicklungsbank

Location

Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia

Project Duration

October 2016 – October 2023 (proposed end date)

Background

The programme location is in the upper watersheds of Palu/Lariang and Lore Lindu National Park. The Lore Lindu National Park is one of the largest remaining mountainous rain forests in Sulawesi and has high importance in terms of biodiversity and culture, as well as archaeological aspects. The park covers an area of 217,991 hectares and is the core zone of the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve.

This program aims to investigate the potential of adding integrated watershed and biodiversity components for Sulawesi into the Indonesian – German REDD+ Programme. The objective is to contribute to the implementation of strategies for forest conservation and rehabilitation in order to reduce climate-relevant emissions and improve livelihoods of the rural poor (overall objective of Indonesian-German Forest Programmers).

Services Provided

Hatfield has been tasked with the implementation of strategies for forest conservation and rehabilitation to reduce climate-relevant emissions and improve livelihoods of the rural poor in the focal area: the Lore Lindu landscape. Key outputs include:

  • Secure the integrity of Lore Lindu National Park.
  • Rehabilitate and restore degraded forests in the sub-watersheds of Miu, Gumbasa, Wuno, Bambamua, and Upper Lariang.
  • Improve livelihoods in villages bordering the national park and near to protection forests.
  • Support research in areas of biodiversity conservation and climate change.
  • Support capacity development for government agencies.
  • Strengthen law enforcement for forest and biodiversity protection.
  • Support biodiversity protection and monitoring (forest stand and key-species).
