Using Survey 123 for Water Quality Field Sampling

On November 2nd 2016, ESRI Canada hosted their annual Vancouver User Conference titled: “GIS: Enabling a Smarter World.” Hatfield GIS specialist Greg Tooth gave a presentation on Hatfield’s use of Survey 123 for water quality field sampling.

Hatfield’s aquatic monitoring programs rely on accurate field data collection, which is validated and analyzed using a quality management procedures. Field log books and paper-based field data sheets are tried and tested data recording methods used by field crews, who often operate in challenging and remote environments. This approach requires electronic data entry following completion of a field program with quality assurance performed in the office. While these methods have been successful at Hatfield for over 40 years, Survey 123 on hand-held devices offers Hatfield field crews the ability to streamline field data collection, with real-time validation to reduce potential errors. The validated field data can uploaded to the cloud and be reviewed only hours after collection, even while the teams are still in the field. Hatfield’s experience and use of mobile data collection reveals a range of advantages for field crews and our clients, with remaining challenges being addressed through further development of Survey 123 applications.
