Thomas Boivin featured on CBC The National

Jul 24, 2006

Thomas Boivin, President of Hatfield Consultants Ltd., was featured in a story on the red tide problems in BC on The National CBC News on July 3, 2006. The news story highlighted Hatfield’s work using Earth Observation-based products and in situ environmental monitoring data to provide environmental information regarding harmful algal blooms (red tides) and other marine parameters, including sea surface temperature and turbidity. The story presented Hatfield’s information system, which was developed for the Chilean aquaculture industry to help them better manage facilities. The news broadcast highlighted the recent algal blooms in the Pacific Ocean and Georgia Strait that threatened aquaculture sites adjacent to Vancouver Island.

The algal bloom monitoring capability and associated web-based systems were developed as part of the Chilean Aquaculture Project (CAP) funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). Hatfield worked with ACRI-st (France) and Apolloni Virtual Studios (Italy) to develop the CAP system.
