PT Hatfield Indonesia Facilitates Workshop to Develop a New Regional Plan of Action for the Coral Triangle Initiative
Jul 05, 2019
PT Hatfield Indonesia recently facilitated a workshop in Manado, Indonesia, to support the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF). The CTI-CFF was launched by the leaders of all six Coral Triangle (CT6) countries in May 2009 to enhance sustainability of the unique marine and coastal biodiversity found within this crucial ecological region. In 2009, the CT6 governments developed an ambitious and visionary 10-year Regional Plan of Action (RPOA), which captured the joint priorities and commitments of each government and served as a rallying point for collective and parallel actions at regional, national, and sub-national levels. In April 2019, government representatives from all CT6 countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, and Timor-Leste—attended the workshop to initiate the development of a new RPOA focused on the next 5 years.
To develop a relevant RPOA for the next 5 years, government officials, conservation groups and scientists discussed the relevance of working through the CTI-CFF platform to address current threats to the lives and food security of coastal communities, the sustainability of businesses in seafood and tourism and the threats to wildlife and nature in this unique region of outstanding marine and cultural diversity.
Dr. Pet-Soede facilitated several discussions for CT6 committees to reflect on the relevance of the goals and the effectiveness of the strategies to achieve the CTI-CFF vision going forward. PT Hatfield Indonesia will continue to support the CT6 countries and their partners throughout the development of the new RPOA, expected to be complete by September 2019. Additional supporting activities will include further consultations with experts and stakeholders regarding a financial mobilization strategy, and the development of strategic communication approaches.
