Hatfield Welcomes New Staff
Jun 04, 2019
Hatfield Consultants continues to grow, and we are pleased to introduce the following staff:
Emilia Mackowiak – BSc Biological Sciences – Wildlife Technician
Emilia joins our Wildlife team as a Wildlife Technician based in our North Vancouver head office. She comes to Hatfield with a solid background in fisheries, fish husbandry, invasive species management, and habitat restoration, including well-developed monitoring and surveying skills for fish, mammals, amphibians and birds. Since completing her BSc in Biological Sciences and her Diploma in Fish, Wildlife and Recreation, she has had the opportunity to work for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ducks Unlimited, and the Fraser Valley Conservancy, as well as for other environmental consultants. We look forward to Emilia lending her skillset to our growing Wildlife team.
Matt Husband – BSc Biology & Medical Sciences – Senior Environmental Specialist
Matt joins our Infrastructure & Environmental Management team with a strong background in the areas of environmental management system development, compliance and design evaluation, and construction monitoring at both the owner and contractor level. He has experience with a wide range of infrastructure projects including major oil sands mine developments, liquefied natural gas export terminal projects, hydroelectric power generation projects, and pipelines. Most recently he has held the positions of lead Environmental Coordinator or Manager for a handful of large-scale infrastructure projects, including the G3 Terminal Vancouver Project, the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, the Site C Clean Energy Project, the CFSW LNG Canada Project, the Fluor Kitimat LNG Project, and the K2 Mining Project in the Kearl Oil Sands. We are fortunate to add Matt to our infrastructure team and look forward to his contributions to our similarly large infrastructure projects.
Matthew Fung – BSc Computer Science & Atmospheric Science – Environmental Information Systems Specialist
Matthew joins our Environmental Information Systems team as a new graduate with a double major in Computer Science and Atmospheric Science. As an intern at UBC’s Weather Forecast Research Team, he was in charge of extending features of the front-end map layer of the forest fire forecast system. Through this experience, he learned that decisions that may seem arbitrary from a software development standpoint can greatly impact the way data is interpreted. In addition to working with large environmental data sets, Matthew’s cross-disciplinary studies have allowed him to develop software with a science-first mentality.
Graham Smerek – BSc Earth Science – Water Resource Technician
Graham was born and raised in Fort McMurray and he is happy to be back home after completing his BSc in Earth Science at SFU in Vancouver. For the past three summers, Graham has worked in the oil sands for the Alberta Energy Regulator as a spill first responder and a water quality inspector, in addition to working on an oil sands risk assessment. He had the opportunity to work with BC Hydro on their Site C Project to ensure their Environmental Protection Plans were following compliance. In addition, he also spent a summer working with the Alberta Geological Society and is very proficient with ArcGIS. Golf and hockey have always been a big part of Graham’s life and he played Junior A Hockey for the La Ronge Ice Wolves, the Fort McMurray Oil Baron’s and, most recently, was Assistant Captain for the SFU Men’s Hockey Team.
Sarah Gray – BSc Biological Sciences – Environmental Technician
Sarah joins our Wildlife team as an Environmental Technician based in our Fort McMurray office. Most recently she worked as a Wildlife Referral Technician for Alberta Environment and Parks where she reviewed renewable energy projects to ensure compliance with provincial legislation and policies surrounding wildlife. She also has experience working as a field assistant, a fish and wildlife technician, and a bird bander. Sarah spent four summers working for an environmental consultancy in Fort McMurray while she completed her BSc in Biological Science and Diploma in Fish, Wildlife and Recreation, so she will fit right in with the rest of our team.
Simon Hall – MSc Integrative Biology – Environmental Specialist
Simon joins our Wildlife team as an Environmental Specialist based in our Fort McMurray office. He has 12 years of experience as a field biologist and a technical lead for wildlife regulatory programs, and has had the opportunity to conduct wildlife-focused work in Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. To date he has led several multi-year bird monitoring projects in the oil sands, worked on amphibian surveys, bird banding, and habitat assessments, and conducted audits of wildlife management programs. His expertise in federal and provincial wildlife protection legislation has given him the opportunity to present on these topics to clients and provincial regulatory bodies. In addition to his success at managing wildlife programs, Simon is also skilled at training and mentoring junior staff. Therefore, we are excited to have Simon add his skills to our growing Wildlife team.
