Hatfield Consultants

Hatfield Consultants continues to grow, and we’re pleased to introduce the following staff:

Calgary:

Vanessa Bourne – MSc Biology – Environmental Specialist

After completing her MSc, Vanessa spent 3 years as an Aquatic Monitor in Northern Ontario mastering the Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) protocol. Vanessa has extensive stream sampling experience for macroinvertebrates, periphyton sediment, water chemistry. She has been involved with many fish sampling projects as well as a large baseline monitoring program for the Deputy Minister of the Environment. Vanessa recently completed a cross-Canada cycling trip from Victoria, BC to St John’s, NL raising funds for the World Cycling Relief. Vanessa joins our Environmental Monitoring and Assessment team in Calgary.

North Vancouver:

Carolina Sanchez – BSc Biology, Honors – Environmental Technician

Carolina has recently completed her BSc at UBC and comes to Hatfield with a very diverse international background. Carolina has had the opportunity to work in Mexico, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan, Australia and Vancouver. Her ecological fieldwork experience covers marine and terrestrial ecosystems.  Her honors thesis consisted of assessing the potential impacts of climate change on suitable thermal stream habitat for rainbow trout in British Columbia where she employed a modelling and GIS approach to map habitat suitability in terms of direct and indirect effects of temperature on fish. Carolina has researched the risk single-use plastic items pose on marine life; collected water samples to measure their biological and chemical quality and assess the related human health risk as part of an epidemiological study; and surveyed rare mangrove forest transects to assess species composition and richness, and outline the ecosystem’s biodiversity value. We are excited to for Carolina to bring her vast international experience to the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment team.

Christian Lafrance – BSc Mathematics/Computer Science – Senior Environmental Systems Specialist

Christian joins our Environmental Information Systems team in our North Vancouver office supporting projects internationally and in Canada. Christian has over 15 years’ experience in software development and has worked on some very interesting projects including a senior developer for real-time weather stations for Mexican Naval Ships, as well as software development for financial, payroll, insurance, event management, workflow management, inventory tracking and ecommerce, just to name a few. His extensive project management, business intelligence and business analyst experience will be a valuable asset for this senior role. Christian has a personal passion for sailing, freshwater and marine environments and has spent time sailing in many places around the globe. He currently lives on his sailboat and has the shortest commute to our office as it is only steps away from the marina.

Gillian Thiel – MSc Geography – Water Resources Technician

Gillian joins our Water Resources Group in North Vancouver supporting projects in both British Columbia and Alberta. She recently completed her MSc with her thesis investigating the relationship between subsurface water flow and ponding in a High Arctic watershed using water quality indicators such as organic matter, dissolved major ions, pH, and temperature. Gillian explored climate warming on hydrology and organic matter cycling in High Arctic ponds and soils through 2 years of research and fieldwork.

Lee Coulthard – BA Geography, Advanced Diploma – Geographic Information Systems with Distinction – GIS Technician

Lee comes to Hatfield with a bachelor’s degree in Geography and an advanced GIS diploma. His main GIS project produced a very advanced vegetation map of invasive species for the Stanley Park Ecology society where he remained as a volunteer even after his internship was completed. His maps continue to be used by the society and volunteers today as a tool to mitigate invasive species in Stanley Park. Lee designed species distribution models for 25 different types of invasive plants and developed heat maps to represent risk areas.
