The project’s overall goal is to increase environmental and livelihood benefits to local communities, through the implementation and improvement of REDD+ projects in West Kalimantan province.

Hatfield will assume the role of project implementation supporting unit (PISU) consultant, and will assist the MOEF to: (1) establish REDD+ pilot projects in 17 villages within Kapuas Hulu and Sintang districts, (2) identify and address barriers for effective implementation of the provincial policy framework and strategy for REDD+ in West Kalimantan, and (3) harmonize REDD+ related policies at the national level with those at the Forest Management Unit, district, and provincial levels, in line with the national REDD+ strategy.

This project represents a continuation of Hatfield’s work on forestry and REDD+ implementation programs in Indonesia, and particularly within West Kalimantan Province. This project will establish links between national-level REDD+ initiatives with sub-national governments, and with other donor-funded projects in the project area. Project activities will lead towards improvements in; local community livelihoods, capacities of sub-national governments in relation to REDD+ implementation, and regulations and policies at the Forest Management Unit level to support REDD+ implementation.
