The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) in collaboration with the International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF) recently organized the 3rd Bali Tuna Conference and 6th International Coastal Business Forum. The event was held from May 31 to June 1 in Bali and was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from Indonesia’s tuna industry, government, Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, fisheries associations, NGOs, and academic institutions. On behalf of Hatfield Indonesia, the UK Space Agency, MMAF (Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries), and Inmarsat, Hatfield Indonesia’s Marine Unit Leader, Dr. Lida Pet-Soede, presented the preliminary results of an ongoing collaborative project entitled “Designing and Implementing Innovative Solutions for Smart Satellite Technology to Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Fishing Practices in Indonesia”.

The project aims to utilize satellite technology, using an expansion of Vessel Monitoring System functions. The project is designed to improve safety, productivity, and food security for Indonesian fishermen and their communities, and to increase the effectiveness of monitoring and enforcement of commercial fishing activities by the Indonesian government. The overall goal is to improve policing of illegal fishing and conservation areas and move Indonesia’s fishing industry towards a more sustainable and profitable path.

During the conference, Hatfield Indonesia’s Marine Unit also facilitated a meeting with Indonesian purse seine actors as part of a separate initiative with the Walton Family Foundation. The meeting focused on engaging with major stakeholders in Indonesia’s purse seine sector and gathering information about one of Indonesia’s major fisheries.
