Hatfield Consultants Africa and Botswana Innovation Hub Host First Mapathon

Jun 05, 2019

Participants at the Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH) Mapathon in Gaborone

During the first week of June, Hatfield Consultants Africa, in partnership with Botswana Innovation Hub and the Department of Surveys and Mapping, launched the first BIH Mapathon in Gaborone. This initiative, supported by Yandex, is intended to demonstrate the potential for an e-work Crowd Sourcing Centre to facilitate mapping of key physical and social infrastructure in Botswana. Such a centre would provide youth with access to computing and internet infrastructure and facilitate participation in a diversity of e-work campaigns.

The proceedings were opened by Mr Tshepo Tsheko, head of Marketing and Partnerships, Deputy Director of the Department of Surveys and Mapping, Mr. Abednico Maphuru, and Mr. Simon Hughes, Managing Director of Hatfield Consultants Africa.

The week-long event will see 26 young people from various backgrounds, and with different levels of training and experience, learn about e-work and mapping technologies, while competing for a series of incentives, including industrial internships.

Hatfield is an official partner with DigitalGlobe – Maxar Company, providing high-resolution imagery and elevation products and services to public, private and geo-intelligence clients across southern Africa, including Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
