Hatfield Assesses the Opportunities and Challenges of Management and Conservation in Leuser Ecosystem
Feb 16, 2015
Hatfield was engaged by The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Terrestrial Program to complete a feasibility assessment on conservation opportunities within the Leuser Ecosystem Zone, including the Gunung Leuser National Park. These areas include the last remaining places where endangered Sumatran rhinos, tigers, elephants, and orang-utans still occur together. In recent years, critical habitat has experienced increased pressure resulting from road development, agricultural and settlement expansion, logging, and mining operations.
Hatfield completed literature reviews and engaged with stakeholders through interviews and focus group discussions to complete a situational analysis of the ecosystem. Evaluations of existing conservation initiatives, key threats and the challenges and gaps in management and conservation initiatives were presented along with key recommendations for strategic interventions. Recommended interventions built on TNC’s 25 years’ experience with protected area management, community conservation, landscape HCVF assessments and collaborative forest management throughout Indonesia.
