Hatfield embarks on its fourth river awareness kit in Southern Africa

Jun 05, 2008

Hatfield Consultants will begin work on a River Awareness Kit (RAK) for the Orange-Senqu River in Southern Africa in June of 2008.

Hatfield Consultants, in cooperation with Strata 360, Hans Beekman (South Africa), Water Resources Consultants Ltd (Botswana), GeoTerraImage Ltd (South Africa) and Geographic Information Management Systems (South Africa), has been contracted to design a RAK for the Orange-Senqu basin by Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH on behalf of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The Orange-Senqu River Basin spans Lesotho, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. As the largest river basin south of the Zambezi, the Orange-Senqu is heavily relied upon for domestic, industrial, farm and municipal water needs as well as for its diverse environment that supports a wide range of species. The RAK will address and inform people about high-priority transboundary water and environmental issues in the basin, such as shared water resources and the protection of biodiversity.

This will be the fourth RAK produced by Hatfield Consultants. The Mekong River and Nile RAK were designed as interactive learning tools to inform stakeholders at different levels about the uses of the river and to train people on effective management of trans-boundary water bodies. The third RAK being designed as part of theRegional Aquatics Monitoring Program in the oil sands region of Alberta is currently under production.
