Senior Environmental Construction Monitor

Based out of the Fort St. John, BC office, you would be working in the field with other environmental professionals and project managers, to assist in the completion of environmental assessments and environmental sampling. As this position warrants some travel, a Canadian driver’s license is required. This is a full-time permanent position, not a fly-in, fly-out placement, therefore you will need to live in Fort St. John.

As a Senior Environmental Construction Monitor, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Environmental monitoring of construction activities, communicating with regulators and providing our clients guidance on appropriate mitigation measures will also be a large part of your responsibilities
  • Lead field work
  • Assist the Project Manager and Senior Manager, both in the field and in the office
  • Comply with all health and safety requirements
  • Conduct and direct field sampling programs
  • Document site conditions and observations
  • Complete daily field reports
  • Complete office work including preparation of technical reports
  • Technical report writing, including impact assessments, mitigation plans, permit applications, and monitoring reports
  • Environmental project management
  • Obtaining regulatory and environmental approvals
  • Environmental assessment
  • Data entry, quality assurance and quality control
  • Client and regulator interaction
  • General project and office administration
  • Undertake daily field inspections and reporting to ensure compliance with the environmental protection plans (EPPs) and other regulatory approvals
  • Prepare and submit reports regularly to ensure thorough documentation and recording of environmental protection aspects of the project
  • Collect field based samples (i.e. water, soils, fish, amphibian, avian, wildlife, etc.) and record data and observations in an accurate and well-organized manner

You are our ideal candidate if you:

  • B.Sc., M.Sc., and R.P.Bio., or P.Eng. in environmental sciences, appropriate qualifications for work in BC or Alberta, and at least 5 years of experience in construction monitoring
  • Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) is highly desirable
  • Are available to work in Fort St. John and can work extended hours to meet project demands. Work out of town may be required
  • Ability to demonstrate working competency in environmental inspecting and monitoring (such as field/site inspections, ESC measures, water sampling, field assessment of vegetation, aquatic species and wildlife), and in the use of GPS equipment
  • Capable of some physical demands in an all-weather work environment
  • Fully proficient in reading, writing, speaking English; good oral and written communication skills
  • Valid safety tickets including H2S Alive, First Aid, WHMIS and/or the willingness to obtain
  • Listening, excellent customer service, problem-solving, planning & organizing, proficient with computers and MS applications/programs
  • Must have clean driving record and able to provide acceptable driver’s abstract
  • You must be able to work independently in the field
  • Experience working around heavy equipment
  • Experience leading environmental field surveys of soil, vegetation, fisheries, wetlands, and/or wildlife surveys
  • Strong technical report writing skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Must be able to travel for extended periods to complete required field surveys or monitoring
