Hatfield is seeking a Wildlife Specialist for our North Vancouver or New Westminster offices to participate in project assessment, monitoring, and terrestrial habitat restoration work in British Columbia, Alberta and northern Canada. The main tasks for this position would include pre-construction bird nesting activity surveys, small vertebrate salvages, amphibian breeding wetland surveys, and the gathering of wildlife and wildlife habitat baseline data using standard techniques such as point counts, call playbacks, and snow-tracking surveys. Field work would also involve the description of wetland and terrestrial habitats as well as habitat suitability assessments for species at risk. Technical assistance may be required on aquatic-related projects such as fish salvages, fish habitat surveys, and water quality monitoring. Office duties would include data entry and/or analysis, and reporting on field findings, potential project effects, and wildlife mitigation requirements.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will provide technical support for the environmental permitting, assessment, and monitoring of wildlife projects in British Columbia, Alberta and northern Canada. The role will consist of organizing and implementing wildlife sweeps, breeding bird, reptile, mammal and amphibian surveys, and other terrestrial assessments as required, including study design, data analysis, technical reporting, and client liaison.
Responsibilities include:
- Participating and leading field programs, as required, to conduct and direct technical aspects of programs that assess and monitor wildlife populations and habitat conditions.
- Coordinating and implementing terrestrial baseline assessments, operational and compliance monitoring programs, and impact assessments for wildlife sweeps, specialized surveys, and habitat assessments.
- Providing technical assistance on proposal development, project scheduling, and budget management activities.
- Compiling, managing, and interpreting data, and composing technical reports.
- Providing technical guidance to clients on environmental protection and environmental permitting, assessment, and monitoring.
- Working with teams of environmental specialists and technicians responsible for conducting environmental baseline surveys and impact assessment studies in conformance with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
- Ensuring compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols, as well as compliance with Hatfield’s Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of a diploma or undergraduate degree in biological sciences.
- Two to five years’ progressive work experience, preferably in a professional consulting context.
- Relevant professional designation in British Columbia or Alberta, or eligibility for registration (e.g., RPBio, P.Biol, EP).
- General knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation.
- Appropriate qualifications for work in British Columbia and Alberta, and a valid Canadian driver’s license.
Competencies
- Demonstrated technical competency and knowledge of identification of western wildlife species, following wildlife survey methods and best management practices, habitat feature identification, interpretation and application of provincial and federal wildlife legislation and regulations, and relevant permit application processes.
- Knowledge of native and non-native plant species, vegetation communities (i.e., site series), and Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) is considered an asset.
- Ability and interest to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility, teamwork, and work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
- Experience with wildlife permitting submissions and putting into practice applicable federal, BC, and municipal laws and regulations.
- Proven skills in project management, statistical analysis, and technical writing is an asset.
- Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation, and analysis) with a demonstrated ability to apply a high standard of scientific rigor to all projects and deliverables.
- Excellent verbal and written communication (technical or scientific writing).
- Desire to take on greater responsibility and authority with increasing experience.
- Motivated self-starter with a positive attitude and an ability to think independently and strategically.
