Responsibilities:

  • Develop, organize, and implement ecotoxicology studies, human health and ecological risk assessments, and Environmental Effects Monitoring programs, including study design, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Participate in and/or oversee field programs for contaminant investigations and aquatic environmental monitoring and assessments of aquatic habitats.
  • Support proposal development, project scheduling, and budget management activities.
  • Coordinate contracted work with analytical chemistry and toxicology laboratories.
  • Compile, manage, and interpret data.
  • Depending on your level of experience, supervise and mentor junior environmental specialists and contribute to group and corporate strategic planning and management.
  • Draft technical reports.

Education and Experience:

Mandatory requirements for this position include:

  • Graduate-level research in the fate and effects of chemicals and metals in the environment.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience, ideally in consulting.
  • Appropriate qualifications for work in Alberta and British Columbia, and a valid Canadian driver’s license.

Nice to have:

  • Application of Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment approaches and protocols in British Columbia, Canada, and/or the United States (e.g., BC Tier One Protocol for ERA, BC DERA, FCSAP, Ecological Risk Assessment, Health Canada PQRA and DQRA, and US EPA Superfund).
  • Experience implementing BC Contaminated Sites processes and/or experience completing HHERAs in support of site closure or redevelopment activities.
  • Experience applying water quality guidelines and benchmark development protocols in British Columbia and Canada (e.g., BC WQGs, BC SBEBs, and CCME WQGs).
  • Experience designing and implementing federal Environmental Effects Monitoring programs and provincial equivalents.
  • Knowledge of laboratory-based aquatic bioassay testing protocols.

 Other Assets/Skills:

  • Knowledge of ecotoxicology, risk assessment, and chemical fate and behaviour.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
  • Excellent problem-solving and coordination skills.
  • Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation, and analysis).
  • Desire to take on greater responsibility and authority with increasing experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including technical and scientific writing.
