Strengthening Good Governance

The Strengthening Good Governance through Environmental Management and Spatial Planning (EGAP) Project in Aceh, Indonesia was developed in response to the physical, social, economic, and institutional devastation that resulted from the December 2004 tsunami. The goals of the project are to:

  • Develop and improve good governance practices for the recovery of sustainable livelihoods.
  • Improve mechanisms for community involvement in planning for reconstruction.
  • Development of spatial planning tools for government and community groups.
  • Incorporate environmental considerations into reconstruction plans and activities, with particular emphasis on Coastal Zone Management and the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
  • Promote capacity-building activities including participatory community mapping, training seminars, and knowledge exchange between Canadian and Indonesian professionals.

Funding for this project has been provided by the Canadian International Development Agency’s (CIDA’s) Canada Corp Program, as well as CARE Canada.
