PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) operates an exploration stage nickel mine project in Central Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. As part of WBN’s Local Development Support program, PT Hatfield Indonesia assisted with implementation of an organic farming project in a village located in the mining concession.
WBN provided farming equipment and nursery facilities for the organic farming program in Gemaf Village, while the village provided the land. Interested villagers, who were mostly women, organized themselves into a group to undertake and manage farming activities. Hatfield provided training in organic farming techniques such as composting, sowing of vegetable seeds, weeding, watering, control of pests and harvesting.
There was an abundant harvest at the end of the crop cycle. The harvested vegetables were consumed by villagers and was also sold to WBN for use in its canteen. The villagers were able to develop useful skills through the program, at the same time earning additional income and improving nutrition in their diet. WBN plans to replicate this successful model of sustainable community development in other villages in and around the mining concession area.
