Agent Orange Investigations

Hatfield’s work has been recognized by the international community as the most comprehensive investigation of dioxin impacts in Viet Nam. In 2000, Hatfield was awarded the Mark-Drake Award in Recognition of Excellence in Communicating Private Sector Contributions to International Cooperation Issues for its Agent Orange work in Viet Nam.

Hatfield’s project experience in Viet Nam has resulted in the following key outcomes:

  • Development of critical baseline data on the Agent Orange dioxin situation in Viet Nam. Hatfield, in close collaboration with the 10-80 Division of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, completed an assessment of suspected dioxin hotspots near former military installations in 12 provinces in Viet Nam
  • Development and implementation of policies, standards and guidelines within the Government of Viet Nam and Lao PDR to deal with Agent Orange dioxin contamination.
  • Development of mitigation plans to reduce human exposure to contaminants, particularly to women and children.
  • Training of Vietnamese and Laotitan professionals in pollution monitoring, environmental impact assessment, monitoring, and analytical chemistry.
  • Awareness raising throughout Viet Nam and the international community about the Agent Orange dioxin issue.
  • Remediation of dioxin hotspots located on the Da Nang Airport property. In order to determine the most environmentally-feasible option, Hatfield is working with CDM International to conduct an EA/EIA that meets US Agency for International Development (USAID) and Government of Viet Nam (GoVN) regulatory requirements.

Over the last 17 years, multiple donors including the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Ford Foundation, the United Nations Industrial Development Organizations (UNIDO), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Environment Canada, Health Canada, US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Green Cross International, the Government of Viet Nam and Hatfield Consultants have funded our Agent Orange investigations in Viet Nam.
