Addressing climate change creates opportunities for sustainable land management projects that deliver carbon benefits. With support from the European Space Agency (ESA), Hatfield led a multi-disciplinary team to implement the Earth Observation Services for Forest Carbon Emissions (EO-FORCE) project.
The EO-FORCE project developed remote sensing products and services to support climate change mitigation projects in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector. These services were demonstrated to support two Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) projects in Indonesia.
RapidEye multi-spectal satellite imagery and ALOS PALSAR radar imagery were used, along with forestry inventory data. The end users were the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Indonesia Program in Sulawesi and WWF Indonesia in East Kalimantan Province.
Hatfield continues to provide remote sensing and forestry services for the voluntary carbon market and is supporting a number of REDD+ and ecosystem services assessment, primarily in Indonesia.
