Fauna and Flora in Central Kalimantan

PT Hatfield Indonesia assisted a leading international NGO with an assessment of potential impacts to biodiversity from a proposed coal mining project in Central Kalimantan.

The assessment encompassed all active and proposed coal and gold mining operations, including locally and nationally issued mining concessions or licenses. The activities included gathering data at a national and local government level, data compilation and analysis within a geographic information system (GIS), identification of the most important mining operations from a biodiversity conservation perspective, and recommendations for further engagement with the mining sector in Murung Raya District.

Based on maps produced as part of the project, Hatfield’s report identified where different mining concessions, other industrial land use concessions, and spatial plans were not in agreement. Based on a framework including concession location, size, land cover and habitat type, company background, and proposed mining method, Hatfield identified mining companies for future engagement in similar projects. The work demonstrated to what extent Hatfield can provide support to industry, conservation organisations, and local governments faced with the challenge of addressing environmental protection in mining developments.
