The main objective of the Earth Observation Support for Traditional Ecological Mapping and Biodiversity Conservation in Viet Nam (EO STEM) project was to provide technical support to the WWF Greater Mekong Programme and the Government of Viet Nam through the Green Corridor Project, which is being implemented in Thua Thien Hue Province by WWF and the Provincial Forest Protection Department.
The outputs of the EO STEM Project included:
- Delivery of EO products and data to support the Green Corridor Project: technical support and capacity building was provided throughout the EO STEM Project, including GIS database development, forest cover mapping, and forest fragmentation/integrity assessment.
- Community-based mapping: community mapping was conducted to document traditional land use, forest types, biodiversity, and soil types.
- Conservation value assessment: integration of EO and GIS data was used to determine conservation value for the landscape of Thua Thien Hue Province in order to establish new protected areas.
- Green Corridor Earth Observation and Geographic Information Toolkit: a Toolkit was developed in a CD ROM format containing maps, documents, satellite images, GIS data, and photos that can support decision-makers in Thua Thien Hue Province.
- Training and capacity building: several activities were conducted, including fieldwork training, radar training, remote sensing training, and the production of training guides.
Habitats can only be maintained if the communities dependent on the land understand the importance of conservation and are willing to promote the long-term goals of the project. The outputs of the EO STEM project are designed to support biodiversity and ensure project sustainability.
