A second powerhouse and supporting infrastructure at the Waneta Dam are being constructed as part of the Waneta Expansion Project. The Project includes the design-build engineering and construction of the facility, and the supply, installation and commissioning of two Francis turbine units. Hatfield is responsible for overall environmental management during the design and construction of the Project, including special measures for the protection of endangered sturgeon and other Listed Species.
The Project includes engineering, design and construction of the facility, the supply, installation and commissioning of two turbine-generator units, balancing of plant equipment and power transformers, and a 230 kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) building for the new power facility.
Hatfield’s primary responsibilities include:
- Preparation of an approved Project Environmental Management Plan and associated Environmental Work Plans and Task Plans;
- Development and implementation of environmental training activities, including training over 700 workers as of December 2011; and
- Verifying compliance to Environmental Work Plans through routine monitoring and process audits that comply with our ISO9001:2008 quality management system.
Indicative of Hatfield’s success as an environmental manager on this Project are the results of a recent external audit of the Project found that over 700 workers have gone through environmental training, there is a high level of compliance with both receiving and end-of-pipe water quality, and no major environmental incidents have occurred since Project start-up.
