The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is under increasing pressure to provide sufficient reliable electricity to local communities and industry. In an attempt to address increasing demand, the Government of Lao PDR has initiated a number of hydro-electric projects throughout the country.
Hatfield was contracted to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as part of a feasibility study for the development of a 3 MW run-of-river hydroelectric project in the Long River, Meung Long District, northern Lao PDR. Hatfield undertook the EIA, which included two seasons (wet and dry) of baseline data collection for all relevant biological, physical/chemical and socio-economic factors.
Outputs of the project included:
- Assessment of potential environmental impacts.
- Development of mitigation measures.
- Preparation of an environmental management plan for the proposed development.
The project was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency’s Industrial Cooperation Program. Hatfield was a subcontractor to Stothert Engineering of Vancouver, B.C.
