Fish Habitat Assessment of a Hydroelectric Dam in Indonesia

Nickel extraction is an energy intensive process. The expanding energy needs of INCO’s mining operations and the local communities near Soroako, Indonesia, required development of a new 90 MW hydroelectric facility on the Larona River. As part of baseline assessments for construction of the proposed Karebbe Dam, Hatfield Indonesia was contracted to conduct fisheries and fish habitat surveys for the Larona River and selected tributaries prior to dam construction.

Activities completed under this project included:

  • Characterizing fish communities in the Larona River through utilizing a variety of fishing techniques.
  • Collecting information on water quality and fish habitat characteristics.
  • Conducting baseline fisheries investigations to assess impacts from the proposed development on the river.

Hatfield’s approach to this project was to team experienced international fisheries experts with qualified Indonesian counterparts. This combination of expertise provided the client with a cost effective, high quality product that incorporated both international and local considerations.
