The Georgia Strait Crossing (GSX) project proposed installation of a submarine natural-gas pipeline from BC's Lower Mainland, to Vancouver Island, through northwest Washington State. A comprehensive assessment of potential environmental impacts from the project was conducted by the proponent. Due to the international scope and size of the proposed project, the National Energy Board of Canada (NEB) conducted a thorough review of all project components.
Hatfield worked as a prime technical consultant to the NEB during the review of the environmental elements of the project application and through the Joint Review Panel process. Specific tasks completed included:
- Reviewed baseline and impact assessment sections provided in environmental impact assessment documentation submitted to NEB in support of a proposed sub-marine natural gas pipeline crossing.
- Assisted the NEB and Joint Review Panel with various tasks related to the environmental review process and associated hearings and consultation for the proposed project.
- Prepared the marine environment section of the Joint Review Panel Report and contributed to the formulation of conditions of project approval.
Hatfield provided the National Energy Board with time-sensitive information regarding potential environmental impacts and environmental management issues during the Joint Review Panel process and associated hearings.
