Banpu Public Company Ltd. (Banpu) is a leading Southeast Asian energy company with coal mining operations in Indonesia, China and Thailand. In support of operational mine management and commitments to sustainable development, Hatfield worked with Banpu to design and implement a corporate Geographic Information System (GIS).
A needs assessment was conducted to establish design and technical parameters for a geographic information system, and specific requirements for data, usability, and hardware and software resource requirements. The implementation was based on ESRI ArcGIS Server technology, with a custom geo-database and system architecture that linked individual mine data with offices in Jakarta and Bangkok.
Hatfield successfully integrated Banpu’s corporate GIS with existing standard operating procedures and Banpu’s business process for the Indominco Mandiri mine. This project required expertise in:
- The surface coal mining industry.
- Environmental management and monitoring requirements in the industry.
- Geographic information technologies.
The final deliverable was a customized information system that allowed Banpu to understand its environmental impacts and to responsibly manage and mitigate these impacts.
