The Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project, under the BC Ministry of Transportation, has a mandate to increase the highway’s safety, reliability and capacity between West Vancouver and Whistler. The construction contractor is Peter Kiewit Sons Co. and the project is to be completed in 2009 in time for the 2010 Olympic Games.
Hatfield is responsible for the multi-disciplinary team of environmental specialists in charge of managing and monitoring all environmental issues associated with the project, including:
- Reviewing highway designs for environmental issues.
- Obtaining and identifying authorizations and permits.
- Providing specialist support relating to fisheries, wildlife, vegetation, recreation, archeology, noise and air quality.
- Providing environmental monitors to ensure that environmental management plans, contract documents, and regulatory agency approvals are addressed prior to and during construction.
In order to organize all of the environmental management components associated with the project, Hatfield has developed a database that provides up-to-date listings of documents, permits and authorizations. Where appropriate the system presents this data via a map-based interface, to show systems in place and progress to-date clearly.
