PT Hatfield Indonesia assisted PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) with the implementation of mitigation activities during the exploration stage in order to reduce potential environmental impacts from future mining. The mining project is located in Central Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.
Hatfield began providing technical assistance to WBN with the implementation of land rehabilitation trials in 2006. Under this project, Hatfield established nurseries of native tree species, analyzed biophysical conditions of the trial sites, and conducted various planting trials involving legume cover crops, local grasses and native tree seedlings. The results culminated in the development of a land rehabilitation model which described best practices for future land rehabilitation at WBN’s concession.
From 2008 to 2009, Hatfield conducted extensive forest baseline studies within the concession area. The survey covered various ecosystem types ranging from mangroves, coastal vegetation, lowland forests on various soil types, to lower montane forest. The results identified potential impacts of mining development on protected and/or vulnerable flora and fauna species. Based on these biodiversity data, Hatfield developed recommendations on strategies to mitigate impacts on local biodiversity.
In 2009, a project was initiated to establish permanent forest plots in the representative ecosystem types. Hatfield is working with WBN to establish and survey several permanent forest plots within the concession area. These plots, together with their buffer zones, will serve as a reference for future rehabilitation efforts, contribute to the conservation of local biodiversity, and provide a seed source for natural forest regeneration after mining.
In 2010, Hatfield continues to assist WBN with the monitoring of land rehabilitation trials, establishment of permanent forest plots, and production of educational materials to raise awareness about the value of local biodiversity.
