PT Hatfield Indonesia prepared a GEF Project Design Document (PDD) for the biodiversity component of ADB’s Integrated Citarum Watershed Resources Management Investment Program (ICWRMIP).
Eight conservation areas located in upstream areas of the Citarum River Basin (CRB) were selected as project study areas. The selected conservation areas are representative of important areas within the West Java Montane Forest, a unique and rapidly diminishing ecosystem that is restricted to West Java. This assemblage is important locally, nationally and globally, and includes a number of rare, endangered and vulnerable plant and animal species. At the same time, the CRB is a strategically important river basin with several major industrial centers. The CRB covers more than 13,000 km2 and is inhabited by some 9 million people. The Citarum River supplies some 80% of Jakarta’s raw water and is the site of three major dams and three large multipurpose reservoirs.
This ICWRMIP Biodiversity Conservation program focused on key conservation areas and addressed the following five components:
1) Biodiversity inventory, habitat mapping, and GIS framework development for improved conservation areas management planning and action;
2) Pilot projects for forest restoration;
3) Sustainable financing for biodiversity conservation through payment for environmental services;
4) Mainstreaming biodiversity conservation in the production landscape; and,
5) Project management
