The IFC is undertaking an initiative to facilitate investment into the Indonesian forestry sector to finance commercial rehabilitation of degraded lands through the establishment of forest plantations. Work conducted by Hatfield assisted the IFC to identify suitable land for commercial rehabilitation potentially funded through the Clean Development Mechanism.
Hatfield analyzed a time series of remote sensing data (pre-1990 and current) to identify areas deforested prior to 1990 and currently non-forested. Spatial factors used to determine forestry land use, such as government spatial planning and distance to pulp and paper mills, saw mills, roads, rivers and ports were included in the analysis. Hatfield also included GIS-based mapping of spatial features including the locations of natural forest concessions, timber plantations, palm oil land and protected areas. In addition to identification of land for commercial rehabilitation, a project output was the compilation of a database of forestry stakeholders in Indonesia.
