On April 25th 2017, Hatfield Consultants Africa was awarded one of five ENGAGE Awards by Tim Hascall, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer for Imagery at DigitalGlobe, at the DigitalGlobe ENGAGE 2017 Europe, Middle East and Africa Region (EMEAR) Conference.

The ENGAGE awards acknowledge DigitalGlobe Channel partners who have demonstrated exceptional value delivery to customers. Entries were submitted by partners before the event, and five awards recognising powerful use cases were selected from numerous entries, with each winner the recipient of $10,000 of DigitalGlobe archive imagery.

The Hatfield award recognised their efforts as a channel partner; specifically the sale of the DigitalGlobe Basemap Service to the Department of Surveys and Mapping (DSM) in Botswana.

DSM faced challenges maintaining up-to-date national topographic map series. This challenge resonates with most Government funded mapping agencies in Africa, where spatial data collection frequently gives way to more critical projects such as electrification, water supply and housing. DSM was able to overcome some of these budgetary challenges through the use of the DigitalGlobe Basemap service.

The purchase of Basemap provided the DSM with a cost effective and easy to use solution. For a fraction of the cost of following traditional map updating methodologies, DSM was able to access high resolution imagery covering the entire country. Access to such a vast repository of data greatly improved the efficiency of data gathering and verification, particularly in remote areas of Botswana. Basemap not only allows DSM to undertake map update projects, but also assist other departments by capturing demographic information for national projects including rural electrification, election mapping, etc.
