History of Hatfield Consultants

Hatfield Consultants Ltd. was founded in February 1974 by fisheries biologist Chris Hatfield, in Deep Cove, on Vancouver's North Shore. In 1975, the company was selected as a Fisheries Advisor to the Canadian federal Berger Inquiry into Northern Pipeline Development, which led to numerous other projects, first in the Canadian Arctic, then across Canada, and eventually internationally. Hatfield now has more than 80 staff, is a partnership company, and provides a broad range of environmental consulting expertise throughout the world.

In the 1980s, Hatfield used its fisheries expertise to expand into aquaculture development and management projects in Canada and overseas, and played a role in the establishment of the Chilean salmon aquaculture industry. Around the same time, increasing concerns regarding environmental effects of persistent pollutants from industrial discharges led the company to focus on aquatic environmental effects monitoring (EEM), specifically with the pulp and paper sector in British Columbia. Starting in the 1990’s, our Canadian expertise with persistent pollutants led us to investigate the ongoing impacts of Agent-Orange-related dioxins in Viet Nam. The company continues to lead EEM studies for clients in the pulp and paper and mining industries in Canada, and our Agent Orange studies are ongoing and have helped spur remediation operations of highly contaminated sites in Viet Nam.

Hatfield began operations in Southeast Asia in the late 1980s, and in order to better accommodate an increasing demand for our services we opened an Indonesian joint-venture office, PT Hatfield Indonesia, in Bogor, West Java in 1990. The Indonesia office now includes a staff of approximately 35, providing high quality environmental services to clients throughout Indonesia and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. More recently, our focus has shifted to opportunities related to large-scale development activities underway throughout the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which resulted in Hatfield registering an office in Vientiane Lao PDR in 2011 in order to better support a growing list of regional clients.

Since the late 1990s, Hatfield has developed expertise in geomatics and environmental information management systems. The geomatics group provides image processing and wide variety of data and map products to clients around the world. In addition, Hatfield is also an image reseller for some of satellite data providers.

In 2003, Hatfield expanded its domestic operations and opened a second Canadian office in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where the company undertakes environmental monitoring in the oil sands region. New offices were recently opened in Calgary, Alberta and Rossland, BC. Domestic work continues to be focused around mining and pulp and paper with environmental management of infrastructure projects now included in our portfolio.

In 2010, in order to better serve our southern African clients, Hatfield opened an office in Gaborone, Botswana. Work in Africa is currently focused on working with river basin management organizations to provide capacity building and IT solutions to trans-boundary management issues.
